Guidelines for using images
From Science Online
If you created the picture
Uploading
Feel free to upload and use pictures you’ve taken or diagrams you’ve created to illustrate articles if you want to donate them to the encyclopedia. Remember that anything you upload to Science Online is released to the public, so that other people can take it and use it too!
Use the 'upload file' link on the left side of the page under "toolbox."
If you found the picture
Uploading
You can ONLY upload images that you find online if you KNOW that they are free for public use. For example, most of the images you find on open content sites like Wikipedia are free to use. Most government sites like NASA and the US Fish and Wildlife Service also have collections of free images you can use. News sites and personal websites generally DO NOT allow you to use their images. If you upload a copyrighted image, it will be removed from the site no questions asked.
Use the 'upload file' link on the left side of the page under "toolbox."
Linking to external images
If you find an image that you’d like to refer to in an article, but you don’t know who owns it, you can create an external link to that image that pops up in a new window. That way, you are not stealing the image, but your readers can still see it.
